Cassia phyllodinea is a fast-growing evergreen medium-sized shrub that typically reaches 5 to 6 feet in height and width. It has limber branches that hold distinctive flattened 2 to 3-inch long silver-gray falcate (sickle-shaped) leaves. The leaves are often two-lobed near the tip and shimmer in the sunlight.
During mid to late winter through early spring, the plant produces showy yellow flowers, about 3/4 inch wide, in mass on branched terminal clusters. These flowers attract bees and butterflies. After flowering, the plant develops dangling papery brown seedpods that persist for months.
This species is native to dry inland plains on rocky soils in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and New Territories. It is well-suited for hot, dry locations and is drought-tolerant, handling wind, high heat, and reflected heat exposures. It can thrive in full sun and well-drained soils.
Given its attractive features, adaptability, and low water requirements, Senna phyllodinea is an excellent choice for gardens in USDA Zone 9-12.
