The Japanese Raisin Tree is a deciduous tree with glossy, mid green leaves and edible fruit. It has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine. The fruits are globose and brown or blackish-purple. The fruit are in clusters that have thickened, edible branchlets. The branchlets of the fruit clusters have a sweet, raisin-like flavor. Leaves are ovate with toothed margins. Small yellowish-green flowers are in broad clusters at the twig ends and in the leaf axils. It flowers in the spring and summer and the fruits mature in the summer and autumn. It is native to eastern Asia. The fruit clusters are used to make wine and candy. The leaves are used to make a tea. It has fine, hard timber that is used for construction and furniture. Grows up to 30 feet tall. It grows in full sun and part sun. Hardy in zones 6-9.
